(3/N) Oh another thing (this could go on for a while, sorry) the 8.2 million workers who would be left behind by the Trump proposal represent more than 60 percent of the workers who would have benefited from the 2016 overtime rule that the Trump administration has abandoned.
(4/N) Interested in the future? Because the Trump proposal does not index the threshold, the number of workers left behind grows from 8.2 million in 2020 to an estimated 11.5 million over the first 10 years.
(5/N) Just really. If the 1975 OT rule had simply been updated for inflation, it would be roughly $58,000 in 2020 – while the Trump proposal is for roughly $35,000 in 2020.
(6/N) The take-home point is this: The Trump proposal is based on the idea that someone struggling by on $35,000 a year is a well-paid executive who doesn’t need or deserve OT protections. With that for an underlying assumption, it’s no wonder millions of workers will get burned.
