Accountability requires knowledge, and knowledge requires shining light in places it is not often shined. By centering the experience of girls and women of color, #BreakingTheSilenceLA illuminates truths that are not often illuminated. RSVP: eventbrite.com/e/breaking-the… @sandylocks
As the number of incarcerated women in the United States continues to grow, so does the number of children in homes broken by a racialized criminal justice system. At the moment, there are 2.7 million children in America with a parent behind bars. #BreakingTheSilenceLA
Having a parent behind bars affects a child’s school attendance rates, which further increases the possibility that they will be funneled into the school-to-prison pipeline. #BreakingTheSilenceLA
Girls of color, particularly Black girls, are subject to discipline that is harsher and more frequent than that of their white peers; Black girls are six times more likely to be suspended than their white counterparts. #BreakingTheSilenceLA
Connections between incarceration, poverty, and transgenerational achievement gaps are stark. Case in point, a high rate of youth in the juvenile system have spent time in the welfare system — up to 70% in some areas of the country. #BreakingTheSilenceLA
These facts point us toward a story stitched into the fibers of America: a story of white supremacy, patriarchy, and class hierarchy. In a phrase, these facts point us toward a story of intersectional oppression. #BreakingTheSilenceLA
These facts, however, can occasionally serve to muffle the human catastrophe at their root. At #BreakingTheSilenceLA, we hear testimony from those most affected by a system built atop the backs of the oppressed. RSVP here: eventbrite.com/e/breaking-the…
