“There’s a whole line of thinking that says the recommendation for a study is somehow like a cop-out or weak. “

Because it is. A thread

1) It is a cop out to view being *for* reparations as the equivalent of being *for* a bill that studies reparations. I’m for h.r. 40, and the associated budgetary allotments, as a FIRST STEP. But being for the first step is not synonymous with being for a reparations program.
2. Coates again: “Look, if you have a sickness, you have an illness, you probably start with diagnosis...”

If I go to the hospital w/ gunshot wounds, it’s a given among every doctor in the room that although stopping the bleeding is a first step, there’s more work to be done.
3. There will be surgeries, stitching, physical therapy etc.

And can we assume that a doctor who OKs the initial x rays as necessarily giving his blessing to the months long treatment plan for the victim? Of course not. He blessed only the first step. #ADOS
Ta-Nehisi Coates is supporting a FIRST STEP in the studying of reparations. He’s not supporting reparations, and it is a cop out for him to suggest otherwise. #ADOS
