Trump trots out Barr to whitewash Mueller's report. Barr is clearly corrupt. But Barr knows House Democrats will soon legally force the Mueller report to become public, and they'll have Mueller testify. So Barr gets to keep his job, and Mueller gets to tell us the real story.
So the most this buys Trump is a brief head start on public opinion. Which sucks. But that's what he brought Barr in for. And no one who thinks Trump is a criminal will now think "oh, I guess I'd better start supporting him now." This is fodder for Trump's base, and no more.
None of what's been said today will matter in a week or two, when Dems get the Mueller report. Even Barr admits Mueller couldn't exonerate Trump. That means the report is full of dirt about Trump's actions, which prevented him from being exonerated. That dirt is what matters.
By the way, if the federal government isn't bringing any charges against Trump, that clears the way for the New York Attorney General to immediately bring any charges it wants. No need to wait for federal prosecution to play out.
