Mueller included an Easter Egg in his report saying his investigation does not exonerate trump. Strictly speaking it was unnecessary commentary.

It was surely meant to prevent Barr from whitewashing trump’s obstructive conduct and to help Congress.

Even if trump’s actions don’t meet the very high legal standard of obstruction he has chalk on his cleats. Any common sense judgment of conduct shows he did everything he could to thwart the FBI & Mueller to save himself. Maybe not illegal, but he knew he committed crimes.
3/

trump’s crime was worse than breaking the law. He violated the basic tenets of our democracy and Constitution. He betrayed his country. He continues to maniacally cover it up.

One way to look at this moment: a mistrial was declared because of a technicality.

So what now?

Our party and 2020 candidates will continue to debate Focus On Issues or Impeach. (Which includes how hard and how wide to investigate.)

This is both short-sighted and a false choice.

This oped reflects my own view in the hope of thinking long term.

Since it was published we had a political earthquake.

Set aside your view of what just occurred, whether you think he’s guilty, whether SDNY will get him. Table all of that. Let this indisputable fact sink in:

HE believes he was exonerated. Sounds obvious. But take further.
6/

A man who has skated consequences for 72 years just pulled an OJ. He thinks he’s invincible. Maybe that continues to sound obvious. Time will show there is even worse inside him.

This is scary but not meant to scare. It’s meant to trigger a sober view of the next 20 months.

Our nominee will not be running against the 2016 trump who lied & lied and harnessed the worst of America.

He now knows he can abuse his office without consequence. He didn’t until now.

To date it’s been to save his skin. Next it will be scorched earth to exact revenge.
8/

Taking the House was lifesaving. We effectively have a veto on all but his nominations & judges.

But he - and his staff & entire administration - are emboldened. They will focus their devastating fire at every measure of Congressional (House) oversight we throw at him.
9/

This next part is what the 60% of Americans who want this nightmare to end -but have resigned themselves to November 2020 being the next offramp- need to consider:

He now has both the immense power of his office and a belief he can’t be stopped from using it against enemies.
10/

Defeating him was never going to be easy. If you think it’s as simple as visiting Eau Claire more, get off Twitter. Or block me before I block you.

Defeating a donald trump who won’t think twice about employing illegal tactics against our nominee is a whole other ballgame.

Consider:

trump obstructed in plain sight. He’s getting away with it. He’ll get worse. He’ll fight oversight to a draw.

Left unchecked if impeachment is taken off the table too taboo to discuss, will we wake up 11/4/2020 kicking ourselves for underestimating his autocracy?

We’ll win by focusing on issues & policy to take back our future.

But to focus and try to protect our nominee we need to keep him bogged down. Throw the kitchen sink at every violation for 589 days straight. Keep him focused on saving himself, his kids, his business.

It may not be who we are, but it’s where we are.
