Today, I’m testifying to the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health, & Human Services on @POTUS’s FY 2020 Budget – a budget that puts the needs of students, parents, teachers & local leaders first. Watch live here:
Doing the same thing—and more of it—won’t bring about new results. I propose a different approach: freedom.

This budget focuses on freedom for teachers. Freedom for parents. And freedom for all students.
This budget increases access to school choice. This includes #EducationFreedom Scholarships and increased funding for Charter Schools, the DC Opportunity Scholarship Program, and Magnet School Programs.
The President’s 2020 Budget proposes a historic investment in America’s students: Education Freedom Scholarships.
#EducationFreedom Scholarships can be applied to public school options, such as apprenticeships or transportation to a different public school. States have the opportunity to be really imaginative and serve the unique needs of their students.
Freedom and flexibility for teachers is a key part of the 2020 budget. Teachers are our students’ champions. They deserve to be given the freedom to pursue professional development in ways that work for them, and to benefit from high-quality mentoring and residency programs.
Every student/teacher deserves to be safe at school, & it's clear there is no universal school safety plan that will work for everyone. @POTUS’ budget dedicates the dollars/resources states and schools need to develop plans, offer counseling, & implement evidence-based practices.
Vulnerable students are our priority. This budget provides continued support for our nation’s most helpless students – including Title I grants, Impact Aid that supports federally connected children, and IDEA formula grants.
There are over 7M unfilled jobs in the US – that’s over 7M opportunities our nation’s students must be prepared to seize. Strong CTE & apprenticeship programs can help ensure our students are career ready on day 1. The 2020 budget prioritizes innovation and modernization in CTE.
Streamlining and improving postsecondary aid is another priority of this budget. This will include Pell Grant eligibility expansion, simplification of the student loan program and loan repayment, and improving student aid programs.
In the end, budgets are about priorities. Mine are: students, parents, teachers, and taxpayers.
