1. Some mind blowing insights - about history of institutional corruption in Nigeria’s govt. As early as early 50s the regional govt. were already acclaimed as pervasively corrupt. So much hype about the “so called” founding fathers! #knowthyhistory
2. The founding fathers themselves were a byproduct of an already profligate system quite widespread as early as 1930s - an “unintended” consequence of the British Indirect rule #knowthyhistory
3. The lack of legitimacy of the colonial law amongst indigenous people, the customary traditions of gift giving, belief in the invisible spirit realm and the indirect rule formed the perfect recipe for establishment of impunity and bribery as far back as 30s
4. All from a thoroughly researched book about the history of organized crime in Nigeria titled “This Present Darkness” and has got me thinking
5. If a way of life has been deeply accepted by a people from generation to generation (at least for 70years) - in various govt. forms - customary, parliamentary, military, presidential - what exactly then is the problem? The law, the people or both?
6. Nothing much is new today as much as 1930s, 40s, 50s, independence, military era and now this democracy. If anything, we have increased from 24m to 180m in 70 years. Our profligacy now means serious problems cause of an expanded population base
7. Therefore, what really is this corruption? if we’ve tried to solve a problem 4 over 50years (corruption was the reason 4 the first military coup) n we can’t - maybe d problem hasn’t been rightly identified or it’s not a problem at all
