I'm about to subtweet certain segments of #TheMagicians fandom so hard, ready?
Sometimes, I see self-professed fans of the show having a chat here on the twitter. Now, this is not my first fandom rodeo. I'm a born n raised fangirl myself, from the olden days before the advent of worldwideonlinecommunities, and also I write stuff for the Comic Con crowd. So.
It goes without saying that my knee-jerk impulse is to quickly avert my gaze, out of some, like, Prime Directive type personal creed, and also cause-- not to blow your mind-- there are folks on the internet who are kinda... mean?
Here is the thing about #TheMagicians fandom. You know what they do, besides dress up like megafabulous female High Kings with eye patches? Support one another's mental health. That's what's all up in my timeline today. People naming their struggles and offering mutual support.
I'm not saying this to interfere. I kinda feel like your mom even mentioning it, and I def wanna stay on the proper noninvasive side of your bedroom door. I mostly mention it because... I feel it's fair to share with you that the show was born in EXACTLY THE SAME SPIRIT.
It's not just a story we tell at the Cons, @johnthemcnamara and I actually did option the books with our own dough and write the pilot on spec in his garage. While we were both extremely, highly, very unemployed.
I'd just gone through some shit that left me quite anxious and... let's call it emotionally crispy; and John, well, is obviously perfect in all ways, but I think he'd agree we were two friends who just wanted to hang and support each other's desire to write what we felt.
Several times during the pilot process we'd be figuring something out about Q or Julia and I'd think "fuck if I know what happens to this project, maybe no one ever buys it, but MAN is it helpful to write this shit, and just TALK ABOUT IT with someone who gets it."
So that's kinda the beating heart of the pilot, and that's the instinct I listened to with every single person that I, together with John and Michael London and later @alonsomyers had a hand in hiring.
Not that making the show would be a therapy session-- it's not, cause most of us already have plenty of therapists. More that these are people interested in addressing directly the fucked up, hard human shit. (Plus obviously dragons; but those are a metaphor anyway.)
So I'm going to break my rule about not looking right into a fandom's eyes while they're doing off-campus fandom stuff and say: it moves me a lot to see you supporting each other. Naming your struggles. Modeling the bravery of being truthful for each other. It makes me proud.
Okay, that's it. Back tomorrow to complain about how working with @johnthemcnamara seems to have resulted in a timeline where I helped produce an episode where everyone sings... Whitesnake. I mean, that's dark.

Anyway, I love you gorgeous, weird creatures. xo
(One small/massive PS. All of the above is because @leverus wrote the books that first explored this, and let us explore further with the show. They hold the same kernel and also are in deeply beautiful ways so different from the show; if you haven't, I dare you to read 'em.)
