News media has made countless headlines out of first day fundraising totals for 2020 Democratic presidential candidates... but is that the full story? If the strength of a campaign is measured strictly in dollar signs, then we're ignoring the support of people.
A full presentation of these figures should look something like this. Looking at money alone only perpetuates the power of big donors and money in politics.
Rounded figures are expected, but consistency is still important. Note: Beto's average is clearly from his initial report of 128k donations, not individual donors.
As an aside, I personally don't find these "first day" figures to be all that compelling. It certainly measures initial enthusiasm, but it also leaves no room for a potential upstart candidate or a campaign building momentum.
I'll be updating these charts as more candidates declare and/or as more figures are released. I'm especially looking forward to breaking down the FEC reports next month...
