Hey #MadisonWI & anti-racist friends, please be aware of what's happening in Madison with @OvertureCenter's production of Miss Saigon. Originally Overture agreed to host a panel by Asian American Studies scholars on the representations of #AsianAmericans in the show.
Now, the day of the panel, @OvertureCenter has cancelled the panel entirely. Apparently leading up to this Overture staff did not up hold promises, refused to print the program note by Dr. Timothy Yu, and ultimately cancelled the entire panel.
The actions of Overture make several things clear. First the #racism in Madison is not limited to anti-black racism & we need to support our Asian and Asian American community members.
Second, Overture is profiting from a #racist representation & refusing to include the voices of those impacted--in fact even promising to include them and then cancelling last minute despite their labor and preparation (likely given for free).

I am going up for tenure next year & preparing my materials. There is a book chapter I was invited to write in Fall 2014 just months after I got my PhD. I submitted the chapter in Spring 2015. The edited collection this chapter was written for has still not been published.
I am sure there are decent reasons for the immense slowdown in production. But can you imagine if I was relying on this publication as a junior scholar? I write this piece less than a year after graduating & will likely have tenure before its published. That’s bananas.
As someone working in disability studies I know there was many reasons for delays in schedules, but as a multiply marginalized junior scholar I also know that one publication coming in YEARS late could really fuck with someone’s tenure case.

Read the midterm evaluations for my GWS 101 large lecture course. A little over 1/3 of the students filled out the evaluation online. Average rating of 4.5 out of 5. Vast majority of the comments positive. Best one: “Basically this course makes you a better human.” 🙃
I’ve been struggling with the fact that I put SO MUCH TIME into this class but I am very disconnected from the students & their learning experience since I only lecture while TAs lead discussions & grade. Sometimes it feels like shouting into the abyss & hoping someone heard.
These evals help remind me students are indeed learning & benefitting from the class, even though I don’t really get to see it. A nice gift as we push through the last five weeks of the hardest/busiest semester I’ve had in years.

Men have no inherent right to sex. That is, no right to others’ bodies. Maybe if men weren’t so shitty, someone would fuck them. As women assert their right to say no & to choose sex on their terms, I imagine this number will rightfully keep going up. #DontFuckShittyMen2020
I say this as someone who has fucked a lot of shitty men in my 20s bc I didn’t know I was allowed to have standards. As a fat black woman I thought I was supposed to accept any attention I was given, even if that person wasn’t good to me. I know better now. And I fuck better too.

1) Hey it's time for me to goto bed, but one final thing inre #eggboy/#eggboi. As noted, neo-#Nazi Neil Erikson was one of the 5 or 6 men who, er, restrained the teen; Erikson has criminal convictions for antisemitic (FEB 2014) & anti-Muslim (SEP 2017) actions.

Racism began in the USA at its foundation w/ the wiping out of the indigenous population. Darker-skinned, perceived as inferior & killed in their 10s of 1000s in institutionalized genocide. This was the beginning of the US meme of white superiority.

My #BlackHistoryMonth story:

In February of my senior year of high school, there was a Black History Month presentation scheduled. But attendance was optional.

The optional attendance policy upset the black students in the school. They staged a walkout during the lunch periods.
My 4th period class -- lunch periods shared the same time slots as 4th period classes -- was all white students, so we sat in our room during the walkout, which I think we could see from our window. None of us kids really understood why the walkout was occurring.
After all, it was a Black History Month presentation, so why should everyone have to attend it, instead of just students who were interested in Black History (whatever that meant), of whatever race? The attitude in the room was one of mainly confusion.
