This is terrible on a number of levels.

Also the citing of the right to education in the European Convention on Human Rights is problematic. Yes, it is correct that under A1P2 parents have a right for their children to be educated in accordance with the religious beliefs. However... 
The right doesn't exist in isolation. It must be understood together with other rights in the Convention, particularly the right not to be discriminated against, which protects LGBT people amongst others. That also includes a positive duty for the state to reduce discrimination
... which is what the new guidance is designed to do.

I hope - really hope - that the Manchester community comes out strongly against this anti-LGBT ugliness. You have the @chiefrabbi on your side, don't let the fundamentalists win.

@chiefrabbi On a principle level, religious communities should have a right to educate their children compatibly with the beliefs, but if their beliefs mean teaching prejudice against LGBT people, a line must be drawn. In the same way it would be if religious lessons included racial hatred.
@chiefrabbi We don't live in a theocracy and some beliefs have to give way. Religious communities have always adapted to the modern world, e.g. Orthodox Jews don't stone people or practise an 'eye for an eye'. The @chiefrabbi gets it.
