Do you trust the Government?
How about the previous one?
The one before that?
Or the one before that?
Did they always behave in your best interests?
If the answer to any of the above is "no" you'll grasp the importance of EU oversight.
Basically the EU act as a sanity check of last resort. EU laws on things like the environment, workers rights, human rights etc provide a baseline below which the Governments of EU countries cannot go. And it is just that. They are perfectly free to implement tougher standards.
So if you say we're better off outside the EU, you're saying that you trust all future UK governments between now and the end of time to look out for your interests. 🤔

At Brexit Questions, Toby Perkins talks about a manufacturer in his constituency that has had to spend £50,000 getting its main product recertified because the UK certification will no longer be recognised under a no deal Brexit.

Presumably this is happening thousands of times!
And that's as close as it gets to wasted money... The companies don't gain anything whatsoever from doing so. They're having to spend very significant amounts to try and preserve the status quo. Same will be happening for patents and trademarks, professional qualifications etc.
But this cost doesn't show up neatly in one place. Instead thousands of firms bear their Brexit bruises in sullen silence. Only a very few extreme cases make it to the media, where the company is too large or the sum too significant to suffer in silence.

It's amazing how many Brexiters hold up the theoretical future collapse of the EU as a reason to crash out of it now. No-deal is like demolishing your home around you because a roof tile looks a bit wobbly. Yes, if the EU were to fail economically, it would be bad for the UK.
But that would be a relatively slow failure, signposted at every turn, giving us the opportunity to react. No-deal is as abrupt as a guillotine blade. Head on the block on 12 April, *snick*, and our economy's rolling in the gutter.
So it seems very odd to crave the *certainty* of a quick economic death in 8 days time over a *possible* long-term decline. There must be something else at work beside rationality. Lust for power? Hatred of Europe? Whatever it is, it's trumping common sense!

The idea that leaving the EU on WTO terms alone will only have a minor impact on the UK is just wishful thinking.

N°1: you assert, "Britain traded perfectly well for the large chunk of history it has spent outside the EU." This is a spurious argument. The EU didn't exist then. We are going from the best possible trade terms with the EU (SM+CU) to worst (#WTO).

@JamesDelingpole This will not just impact our trade with EU27 + EEA/EFTA4, but also with those countries with trade with via EU FTAs and those countries we trade with on WTO+++ terms, the '+++' furnished by the EU's 759 facilities that improve on #WTO terms.

You're proposing that we dramatically downgrade 100% of our trade to WTO terms alone, at the stroke of a pen. This is insanity. It has taken decades to reach to position we're in today. No wonder Mogg says 50yrs to recover!

Another WTO-Brexit article. This time leaving the EU on WTO terms is going to reduce food prices. Which it could, there are plenty of agriculture tariffs that could be cut, but this relies on the assumption that the UK will do so.
Bear in mind that the UK is currently proposing to maintain EU agriculture policy at WTO, and is engaged in negotiation accordingly. This is likely to go on for a while, and the chances are that for this period we won't be tampering with tariffs. ecipe.org/publications/t…
Another issue is that tariff policy is complex, given the needs to balance WTO-MFN, bilateral negotiations, and meaningful preferences for developing countries. Whilst you can make changes in a hurry that isn't exactly ideal.

A thread on the problems of No Deal and its friends WTO and FTA.

I'll be neutral, simple and logical and to avoid fake news and stay objective, I'll quote data.

Brexit often skips the awkward details to sell a dream. I don't want to do that so call me if I miss stuff.
Definitions.

No Deal and WTO - same thing. One is the plan, the other is the result. In other words crashing out of the EU with nothing agreed and relying on "WTO" terms.

The Free Trade Arrangement assumes no tarrifs on either side and otherwise no agreeement crashing out.
Many areas are so complicated that it's hard to simplify. Trade, for example, is about 100 issues, not one.

So I'll do the simple stuff then add more in answer to questions.

Also many No deal problems could be solved. If you had 15 years...and a plan
