With faith comes a longing. (Heb11:13-16) Recognizing this fact has been one of the most life-saving, marriage-saving, job-saving, friend-saving, heart-guarding things God has ever taught me. We of faith have a built-in longing that can easily be misunderstood as dissatisfaction.
Don’t get me wrong. There’s certainly legitimate dissatisfaction and it needs sorting out with God. But I’m talking about something that can feel a lot like it that, if misread, could cause us to burn through relationship after relationship trying to find what we’re looking for.
We of faith have a longing for someone we’ve never seen and to be somewhere we’ve never been and to do something we’ve never done. It cannot be satiated here. We could start over 10 times with all new people in all new places & we’d confront the same exact feeling. It’s not here.
Before you walk away from that person, place or thing God Himself gave you in search of someone or something somewhere that will finally cut it for you, finally truly satisfy, consider this. You may not be unhappy. You may be homesick. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference.
Abide faithfully here. This life’s not the endgame but it’s good. Worth living well. The something-new -that’ll-never-get-old that we keep longing for is not here on this earth. It’s eternal. We’ll get there. And we will finally find the One we’ve been looking for all our lives.
