/ 🔀 Some thoughts on how to build and promote an asynchronous culture inside your team. Doing this can help you produce better work while having the ability to disconnect and have a better life quality.
/ 👏 Evaluate people differently, e.g., based on their output and results and not how responsive they are or if they are online all the time.
/ ⏰ Abolish work hours or the need to come into an office. This will let you hire from anywhere and would force your organization towards more asynchronous communication.
/ ✍ Promote writing and communication as core skills to master. This will reduce the need to chit-chat and help people go to the core of things faster. Everyone needs to be a great writer in an async culture.
/ ✍️ Stuck in a meeting or a conversation that is going nowhere? Ask people to write in a thread or a document instead.
/ 🛑 Teach people how to spend time productivity while waiting for an answer. Blocks aren't a huge problem, as there is always something else to do.
/ ⏳ Give people time to consider something and set reasonable deadlines on when you expect an answer. E.g., I want to finish this in 2 days and would love your input instead of I want your feedback in the next hour.
/ 🛠 Use tools that promote deep work and async communication, e.g., Github pull requests, Basecamp, and Twist over Slack. Real-time communication promotes an ASAP culture and fear of missing out as people need to be online when the conversation happens.
/ 📄 Document things and make transparency a core value. For example, everyone in .@Doist can read all of the core discussions (regardless of which team it is, this includes leadership discussions). With transparency, people don't miss important conversations or decisions.
/ 🚨 Have communication channels for emergencies. .@Doist has Telegram rooms that we use as an emergency mechanism. We also have phone numbers of people. We use these a few times _per year_. Most things aren't urgent and don't require an instant response.
/ ❓ What more? Please add your input.
