If you saw the "Ferry Good Idea" headline on the @MetroBOS today (and maybe, like them, you didn't get the whole #futureferry story), then this thread is designed to give you all the info about the water transportation business plans that @BostonHarborNow released yesterday. 1/
One of the routes is called the "Inner Harbor Connector". It proposes service in a star-shaped pattern between Long Wharf, Navy Yard Pier 4 (Charlestown), Lewis Mall (East Boston), and Fan Pier (Seaport) with $3.50 or $6.50 fares and up to 1.6M pax/yr! bostonharbornow.org/wp-content/upl… 2/
The other route would provide service between Squantum Point Park in @CityofQuincy and Long Wharf with additional service to Fallon Pier on Columbia Point. The proposal suggests $6.50 fares, 40-minute peak service, and about 400k passengers/year. bostonharbornow.org/wp-content/upl… 3/
The work was part of a larger comprehensive study of water transportation that looked at sites from Gloucester to P-town. Dock reports for sites that weren't selected as well as draft reports on existing conditions and national best practices are at bostonharbornow.org/ferryplans/res…. 4/
This vision for #futureferry service came together with funding from @MassDOT, @massport, the Seaport Council of @MassEOHED, @MassConvention, @BarrFdn, the Cabot Family Charitable Trust, Clippership by @LendleaseGroup, and @EnvoyBoston. 5/
Yesterday, many of these sponsors and other partners came together for a tour of the Inner Harbor Connector. It started on the dock with remarks by @BrianGolden2, Astrid Glynn, @Marytweets2, and @joelabarrera. (See subthread) 6/
And on the boat, we heard from @Harborkeepers, @LendleaseGroup, the Friends of the Charlestown Navy Yard, @bostonNHP, @SeaportTMA, and @MassConvention + were joined by supporters from @BostonPlans, @MassDEP, @TrusteesBoston, and @HarborfrontBOS. 7/
In the evening, we heard from @massdot Secretary @Steph_Pollack + a great panel on implementation moderated by @Marytweets2. You can watch the whole #futureferry event on Facebook. 8/

It was a great discussion about what's working well and what's challenging @NYCferry, @SFBayFerry, and @EncoreResortBH with @mistergordy, @jcwong86, and @jimfolk123 sharing their ferry experiences for Boston to learn from. 9/
There was another boat tour today of the Quincy/Columbia Point Service with @MassDCR Commissioner Roy, @mayortomkoch, and @MassDOT's Astrid Glynn on the dock and more collaborators talking about the potential for #futureferry service on the boat. 10/
We've gotten a lot of great radio coverage about the #futureferry proposal from new outlets like @WBUR. 11/ wbur.org/bostonomix/201…
And some great write ups including a spot-on piece by @BosBizJournal's @bygregryan where I note that "Businesses and business groups could serve as funding sources or public cheerleaders for the services" (hopefully both!) 12/ bizjournals.com/boston/news/20…
And @BostonGlobe's @jonchesto has consistently been covering this process and shared our latest update with readers. 13/

Implementation of these #futureferry services will take partnerships to upgrade dock facilities, invest in vessels, design routes, + likely subsidize the operating costs of at least the initial years of service. @BostonHarborNow will stay involved to help realize the vision. 14/
If you made it to the end of this thread and you love ferries, I encourage you to explore more of the Boston Harbor by boat this summer. Learn where all the ferries go today with our most recent #WaterfrontWednesdays vlog or join a ⛴️+🚲 tour. 15/x
