George Asafo-Adjei thread right here, right now. Like I said before, I like what I see. Some are projecting him at guard. I actually think his best spot is at offensive tackle. Follow along to see why as we go over his positives and negatives:
I watched four games of George AA. I watched Florida, Mississippi State, Georgia, and Middle Tennessee State. We see him going against the likes of Montez Sweat, some reps vs Jeffery Simmons, Jachai Polite, and Cece Jefferson among others.
George will be #64 and the RT. His biggest issue BY FAR is his hands. His timing and his location are inconsistent. Here you can see him give up ground because the UF EDGE gets the punch in and his neck snaps back. If the pass rusher followed it up with another move, AA's screwed
AA's biggest strength is his footwork but even that is inconsistent. Here he is vs Montez Sweat who is too quick. Again, a weak attempt at a "punch" by AA allows Sweat to control the rush and get by him rather easily.
Awful rep by AA. Again, you see the lack of punch makes it easy for Sweat's speed outside rush to get by him. That causes his base to narrow and he opens the gate and waist bends to hell. That's an easy sack for Sweat.
Looking at a run block rep vs UF. AA again doesn't punch first and gets his head snapped back. But look at how strong he is to be able to absorb the blow and then literally throw the DL about five yards backwards. He is able to reset his hips and drive him back. Good recovery.
Phenomenal pass protect rep by AA vs UF. Again we see an example of him to be able to reset his hips. You can see a good bend in his knees and stop the bull rush in it's tracks. If he could do this consistently, he would be drafted 6 rounds ahead of where he was.
We see his short area quickness here vs UGA. The DL in front of him crashes inside, and he helps with a shove against him and is quick enough to pick up a delayed rush from the linebacker and stops him immediately. Underrated rep by George.
Again, you see the inconsistency. We jump back to a run block rep vs UF. He's trying to seal off the backside EDGE but he turns too quickly and doesn't punch in time.
Bad hands ruin everything. He's got the footwork and athleticism to recover vs this EDGE rusher but he literally throws his arms out and hugs the defender. That allows the EDGE to get into his chest and easily spin and disengage from AA. If UK didn't have a mobile QB, it's a sack
Let's give George another crack at Montez Sweat. Sweat ultimately gets the sack but AA does EVERYTHING right. Great footwork, punch is delivered on time and AA controls him through the rep. The QB falls into Sweat by pressure elsewhere. See? George Asafo-Adjei can flash like this
Let's look at AA's power. He's flanked by the TE, but watch him literally bull the defender close to five yards past the LOS. He's got underrated power when he can get his hands inside on a player.
I want you to watch AA's footwork on this rep. His ability to mirror and keep his base a good length is fantastic here and he's done that most of the time during his pass protect reps over these games.
This is a seal block rep vs Montez Sweat. George does a great job. Montez uses his arm length vs OTs to control them. FINALLY Asafo-Adjei gets inside Sweat's frame and HE controls the handfighting. Sweat can't disengage until it's too late. Great rep.
He he he. This is just a fun rep. Asafo-Adjei just bullies the much lighter EDGE defender off the outside run.
I'm going to end the GIFs with the best rep I saw from George Asafo-Adjei. You see footwork, good punch, and then just a bit of nasty as he just throws down the EDGE without much regard. Whew.
My thoughts on George Asafo-Adjei: He's got a lot of work to do. He's got snap to snap variance in his punch/hands. Like most college players, his run blocking is more advanced than his pass blocking. You can see the upside here though.
Every so often, he has a rep that makes you think this dude should be a first rounder. The Giants I think mentioned they had a 5th round grade on him. I think that's fair. He needs to work on his timing with his punch but he's got the requisite strength and athleticism to work.
I mentioned earlier that he reminds me of Ereck Flowers. Flowers was nastier and a bit more powerful but has similar athleticism, footwork, poor punch/timing. The problem with Flowers was that he showed no growth or coachability. George Asafo-Adjei could be better if he improves.
I suspect that he will either be a healthy scratch or could be a utility lineman on jumbo formations for the first part of the year but depending on what they do in FA or if there are injuries, he could be a part of the rotation towards the end of the year. This was a good pick.
Final tweet on him: Why was he not on anybody's radar in the pre-draft process? I don't think he has a defining feature. Not as aggressive as Samia, brutal as Ford, or has the footwork of Dillard. He's just kinda well rounded with some flaws. I am rooting for him hard to develop.
