I fear we may look back on the past few months as a pivot point for the country. The key question from the outset of the Admin was whether our institutions w/d hold. W/d they withstand Trump's efforts to undermine them. With Mueller that answer appeared to be yes. But now... 1/
after years of trying, Trump - through Barr - may have found a way to exert control over the rule of law... and to effectively make himself immune from it. It is not just that Barr is Trump's defense lawyer. It is that Barr is savvy and knows the institutions... 2/
and instead of using that knowledge to protect the rule of law and the institutions of government from a lawless president; he's using his knowledge to not just protect the president but to also go after his enemies. 3/
In short, the Trump administration is becoming less incompetent - and that is terrifying. They are learning how the institutions work and therefore how to work around them or bend them to their will. Barr's appointment c/d be seen by historians as a turning point. 4/
