There are one-off reasons but this is not good: installed new renewable energy capacity was flat from 2017 to 2018, and solar installations continued to fall in first quarter of 2019 in China. Exponential growth of clean energy is our one and only hope.

In China, the solar market crashed early this year with a delay after tariffs were cut last summer. Volumes are expected to recover with new policies but unlikely to see the further 2x or more growth needed to start pushing emissions down fast cleantechnica.com/2019/04/22/chi…
The EU has stagnated for years and needs to get things in gear.
It seems that global picture for 2018 might be a bit better than portrayed by IEA:

I heard a talk by a high ranking government economist late last year describing how the govt aims to freeze the real estate market, making it near impossible to sell flats while maintaining wildly inflated prices, constraining supply&increasing occupancy by promoting renting.
Was crystal clear that the real estate bubble is a fundamental financial risk. The govt's plan to deflate it might work but describing it as the act of financial brinkmanship of the decade doesn't seem inappropriate.
Basically you have to maintain the illusion that apts are worth their fantastical sticker prices AND will continue to go up so only a fool would sell BUT you could sell anytime you wanted IF anyone ever wanted to sell.

After the IPCC report on 1.5 degrees, there has been a flurry of "what you can do to avoid the climate crisis" articles and fact boxes in the media, which is great. However...
most of the "tips for saving the climate" reduce us to consumers. Personal consumption decisions are important but making your voice heard is easily a thousand times importanter.
If these climate tips mention any kind of advocacy it's usually limited to voting and such. Which is important. But consider that these articles are read by CEOs, portfolio managers, chief engineers, political advisors and all the other people who make all the big decisions.

China’s organ transplant industry grew exponentially in the 2000s. Today, China is the go-to country for transplant tourists. Organ donation is minimal, but organs are plentiful, wait-times range between a few days & two months—something out of the question in any other country.
Patients have reported that their transplant surgeries were scheduled ahead of time & this can only be the result of forced organ harvesting.

What we argue here is that using what is basically a 1970s-era definition of renewable energy, and conflating "renewable" with "sustainable" or even "clean," is becoming more a hindrance than a help in meeting the main challenge of the early 2000s - #climatechange . 2/
We argue that the concept of RE was largely set in stone well before the magnitude of #climate challenge, and actual problems with some sources that are technically renewable, was understood. This has resulted to, e.g., using the "renewable" label to cover all bioenergy. 3/

Good questions @RedsforNamesake. If confronting #climate change is your priority, it is imperative to ramp up carbon-free energy asap.

1. NJ will now ramp up renewable energy from 13% in 2017 and 20% by 2020 under old RPS to 35% by 2025 & 50% by 2030. Impressive leadership.
2. To ensure that this new clean energy replaces fossil fuels and contributes to #climate mitigation goals, NJ's new laws also make payments to ensure the continued operation of 3 South Jersey nuclear reactors that currently supply 31% of the state's electricity consumption.
2. Cont.: That measure is essential and ensures that nearly all of the new clean energy growth over the next 12 years builds on top of the fossil-free foundation provided by the state's existing nuclear plants.

1/ Quick take on the Trump tariff on imported solar cells is that people are going to lose their jobs. Simple Math: Tariffs increases solar costs. Higher costs means less solar. Less solar means fewer jobs. #Solar
2/ Trump country will lose out the most. Big growth in utility scale solar is in the Southeast, Texas and Southwest. All those Southeast solar markets will be hurt MORE by Trump tariffs because they are the most cost sensitive #Solar
3/ The regions of the country with high electricity prices like California and Massachusetts will be hurt but not as much as Trump country. CA and MA markets will see lower margins for developers but don't expect lots of cancellations. Still TBD. #solar
