1/Want to add some context to the tariffs, trade, 2020 debate. Let's look at Trump's standing in battleground fr Jan '17 to now (@MorningConsult):
IA 49/40 to 44/52 - 17 pt drop
MI 48/40 to 43/53 - 18 pt drop
PA 49/39 to 45/52 - 17 pt drop
WI 47/41 to 42/55 - 19 pt drop
2/This new econ study affirms that the tariffs are doing harm to voters critical to Trump's re-election. One would imagine this would be seen as a big opportunity for Democrats to exploit, be loud.
3/Plurality of Americans view the tariffs as bad, incl non college grads. Dems overwhelmingly oppose, 77-15. So would appear criticizing tariffs good issue in Dem primary.
4/Overwhelming majority of Dems view free trade as a net positive. 67-19 in this @pewresearch poll. Again seems like a good issue in Dem primary.
5/Even NAFTA is seen as an overwhelming positive thing by Democrats. 72-18 in this poll. So, again, opportunity knocks.
6/Single most outspoken critic of Trump's tariffs in Congress has been a Republican Senator from Iowa. businessinsider.com/chuck-grassley… Hint, hint 2020 Dems.
7/We did an analysis recently showing how badly Trump's tariffs are hurting Iowa farmers, and how remarkably unpopular they are. ndn.org/blog/2018/10/i…
8/And the tariffs are doing incredible damage to the American auto industry, and are very unpopular in Michigan. jalopnik.com/the-auto-indus…
9/In sum, 2020 Dems should be leaning far more heavily into criticizing Trump's tariffs. They are hurting the economy in the Midwest, Trump voters in particular. Trump's standing in the region has taken huge hit. Dem voters dislike tariffs, like trade. Is big 2020 D opening.
