I can already tell the gender-swapping Insta filter is gonna be a headache on here. Tons of cis folks using this in a problematic way without the slightest consideration that they're being transphobic. And inevitably, some responding to this tweet in annoyance.
Yes, in a perfect world, folks would use in a good-natured way that's respectful and doesn't mock trans and non-binary people. In an ideal world, cis people would hold each other accountable on it. Guess what world we live in? Neither.
Oh lord, this is being extrapolated to include any and all instances of cis people experimenting or playing with gender norms. That's a GOOD thing and not at all what I meant. I'm saying the app will be used to explicitly call out trans and non binary people. Intentionally.
And just to be abundantly clear: using this filter to play with gender expression is completely fine + lovely. I encourage it. That's healthy. I just worry about the ways transphobic people will use it specifically to harm us. I'm just sad we all can't have nice things, I guess.
