I need the SBC to understand how their broad brush theology is difficult to actually sort out & live under. Women in the evangelical church have tried to sort out the nuance of submission teaching for years and clear scriptural instruction simply doesn’t exist. WE HAVE LOOKED.
Here are some questions I would like SBC boys (who claim scripture is clear on these issues) to answer. Answers should include the scripture reference which clearly tells us how to live our actual lives.
1) Is a woman allowed to speak in front of men at a picnic on a Tuesday? Is she allowed to pray in front of men? Is she allowed to speak between worship songs? Is she allowed to sings songs that might teach about the Bible?
2) Is a woman allowed to preach the gospel to any man at any time? What is the difference between teaching the gospel and expositing scripture?
3) Is a woman allowed to ask a question during a group bible study? What if her question has a point?
4) Can God reveal himself to women? Does God reveal himself to women as often as he does to men? Does the Spirit consider gender when revealing God to humanity?
5) Is a woman allowed to tell her adult son things she has learned about scripture? Is her adult son allowed to listen? Is she MORE allowed to do it if she phrases it as a question? What about her adult son’s male friend? What if they’re standing in church on Sunday?
6) Scripture says women should cover their heads when praying and prophesying - when should women cover their heads?
7) 1 Tim 2 is NOT clearly referring to a church setting. It says “I do not permit a woman to exercise authority over a man, she is to remain silent” without making allowance for various contexts. When ARE women allowed authority over men? Or are ALL women subject to ALL men?
7b) May a woman be a manager at a Starbucks if there are male employees? May a wife tell her husband how she wants the carrots chopped for the stew? Ought a woman tell a man when he has turned the wrong direction on a drive?
8) Can men LOSE authority? if they have sexually assaulted someone - do they lose authority over women? Can they no longer stand behind a podium? What if they have lied, extorted, lusted after a woman? Does scripture say assaulters are allowed to preach, but women are not?
9) Are nannies allowed to teach elementary age boys? Are camp counselors allowed to teach middle school boys? High schoolers? At what exact age, according to scripture, should Timothy no longer listen to his mother and grandmother?
10) Are men allowed to learn from passages of scripture where women are speaking? If women are allowed to learn from both men and women, and men only men, doesn’t that mean women have more access to all God has taught humanity?
If these SBC men think they have put more thought into this, and searched scripture more than we women have, they are WRONG. I’m sure @BethMooreLPM has looked into it. It’s direction for OUR lives. If COURSE we have studied it.
The most ridiculous part of this whole tweet thread, is that NONE of these examples are extreme. They are all based on real life examples of conversations I’ve actually had with men and women trying to sort this out.
The Lord has, through twitter provided an answer to one of our questions:
