1/4 Our new European Heart Journal paper on untargetted NMR metabolomics and atherosclerosis across 3 population cohort studies: MESA, Rotterdam and LOLIPOP studies. A summary of our results:academic.oup.com/eurheartj/adva…
2/4 Metabolome wide association study for CAC and IMT, discovery in Rotterdam and Lolipop studies and replication in MESA, identified 30 metabolites for atherosclerosis, ~7,000 participants. Metabolites were largely consistent between the two vascular beds 
3/4 Replicated metabolites reveal disturbances of pathways related to lipid, fatty acid and carbohydrate metabolism, BCAA and aromatic acid metabolism, TCA, and urea cycle and muscle metabolism
4/4 Analyses of incident CVD events showed inverse associations with creatine, creatinine, and phenylalanine, and direct associations with mannose, acetaminophen-glucuronide, and lactate as well as apolipoprotein B. Metabolites revealed a strong dependence structure.
