Russia is too small and too uncompetitive to decouple itself from global value chains. ft.com/content/c7db7d… In other words, it is vulnerable to disruption (sanctions) and depends on globalisation (which includes some level of global governance).
The political model Putin pursues, great power-competition, therefore contradicts the country's economic needs.
As long as the elite can count on natural resources to provide enough income however, this economic reality will not necessarily shape Russia's political behaviour.
This raises the question for the west: to which dimensions is the western strategy addressed -- the great power-show (which has of course real and bad consequences) or the underlying economic reality (a failure to develop and the need for globalisation)? Both must play a role.
Risk however that the Trump administration falls for the "realist" siren songs about delineation of "spheres of influence", for example here: nationalinterest.org/feature/striki…
