The Prime Minister’s speech is all the more painful today because she has literally done or pledged the exact opposite of so many of these messages over her Brexit premiership. She has wasted time & goodwill. gov.uk/government/spe…
Take this early passage of her speech today.

It is literally the opposite of “Brexit means Brexit”.

It’s a tanker-sized reverse gear on that “red, white, blue Brexit”.

Every time she said she wanted to “deliver Brexit”, she failed to add these important qualifiers.
Today’s speech still features the “over 80% of the electorate backed parties which stood to deliver Brexit by leaving with a deal.”

She knows that, whatever the technical reality of that statement, it’s not a real or substantive reflection.

Why does she persist, knowing this?
Her mishmash promise to include a vote for a second referendum, rather than actually offering a second referendum, is likely to alienate those whom she tried to entice.

However, offering it at all is a very significant step forward for Remainers. It’s out of the starting blocks.
There will be lots of commentary about the futility of so many of her assurances - in law and in trust.

But these passages show she must be living a wilful delusion.

Polling is clear young people don’t want this. Brexit deprives them of actual opportunities we all had.
As for her “it’s a great time to be alive” in the context of Brexit...

I thought that was a spoof on earlier newsreels.

WHO ON EARTH THOUGHT THAT WAS A GOOD LINE?

It’s not a TED talk, and Brexit is not a religion (though it may be a cult).
Whatever happens with her deal, we haven’t started the tough talks yet. Brexit will fill our years ahead.

It’s characteristic of the duplicity sureounding the Brexit debate & she should not be repeating it still.
As for the line about looking around at the state of liberal politics - coming from the architect of the #hostile environment, she who pledged to campaign to remove us from the European Convention on Human Rights, the vile comments made or endorsed by her own party.

Come on.
I would spend time analysing what she promises but the promises aren’t worth much and the almost instantaneous reaction was one in which she was metaphorically booed and hissed.

Doesn’t look like it has much chance.

It didn’t have to be this way, for her or us.
She should have recognised the closeness of the vote, the complexity of issues & the need to seek cross-party consensus at the start.

Instead we got citizens of nowhere, polarisation & deep division caused by her lurching to the Lancaster House extreme.

And, once again, this:
