Designers, preach to us once again how you’re the voice of conscience & ethics in tech cos?

Engineers don’t write voice responses... This is UX design, and it stinks.
“But it responds to a user need! Research shows at least 5% of interactions with a voice assistant are sexually explicit.”*

“Go boil your head.”

It’s all just so nakedly male fantasy about how they’d like women to respond to unasked-for sexual comments.

That belief women are flattered by this shit. The desire that, if you refuse to acquiesce, you’ll say “Sorry” for spoiling their fun.

Get therapy.
Alternatively:

— Hey Siri, you’re hot
— You may have a disorder of sexual development. Here are 3 therapists in your area

— Alexa, you’re a slut
— What would your mother think to hear you speaking to women in this way? Well, you’ll find out imminently: I’ve just dialled her
— Cortana, you’re a naughtly girl
— *deep man voice* Adult module activated. The command “Cortana” will no longer wake me. From now on you must call me Daddy.
Re. 5% of voice assistant interactions are sexualised: YES!
It seems like it’s a problem akin to toddler taming, right?
- Be consistent
- Don’t apologise
- Don’t negotiate
- Don’t over explain
- Calmly and firmly let them know this is not acceptable behaviour
- Stick to your guns
- If the tantrum continues, put them in time out for 5 mins
PS Genderless AI voices exist (& are scientifically interesting!) & should be default
