I'm not a @maggieNYT hater. But the wagon-circling around her today by her colleagues is a sad commentary on journalism. Defensive. Obtuse.
Y'all work at the @nytimes. You don't need to be each other's cheerleaders. Just hire an ombudsperson and show you learn from mistakes.
Here's one example. Martin is a terrific reporter with really good political instincts. Yet this tweet is so tone deaf. Martin is communicating the opposite by tweeting this. It communicates weakness, not toughness. It is not helpful to anyone.
Here's another. Was there a meeting at the @nytimes today to send everyone out to defend Maggie? I can't imagine she'd want this. So why are they doing it? It communicates deep anxiety.
And another. People were legit mad about that Hope Hicks piece. I first tried to defend it until smart people explained why they were mad with tons of evidence. Now I get it. Don't be dismissive. The @nyimes is in trouble if it refuses learn from them.
And yet another. This is so tone-deaf. "Thorough" to some seems "thoroughly transactional." Her critics' valid complaint is that unfair puff pieces like one on Hope Hicks give her access to Trump. Her Hicks piece was remarkably unthorough pro-Hope glam.
And yet a fifth one of these Maggie defenses from @nyimes colleagues. I started this thread after reading three. How many more are there?
Instead of an ombudsperson, they have an "I'm-buds-with-this-person" chorus.
Paging @page88.
A sixth, and yes, calling your readers and critics “insane” is a great look.
Especially after you’ve gotten rid of your public editor.
#ombudsman, not “I’m-buds-with-this person.”
A seventh, eighth, and ninth example in this sarcastic thread of exchanges last night:
@nickconfessore @jswatz @kenvogel
Nick also missed the point in another sarcastic tweet citing a past Times story on Obama admin subpoenas.
A tenth example with a backstory. @NYTLiz is making a valid point. The tweets about Haberman’s mother are unfair. But @neeratanden and her mom might have some questions about Williamson’s moral high ground.
@NYTLiz deleted this tweet. It was linking to an interview with @neeratanden’s elderly mother, w/ no background in politics or journalism. Using such an interview was debatable. The mocking or vulgar tweets about it by @nytliz & @kenvogel were not.
