[Puts on editor hat] #writers, PLEASE believe you will have more ideas and good ones at that. Getting a rejection is not the end all be all of your career or ideas. Every publication is different, every editor is different. There are more chances.
As I say, repeatedly, I give VERY specific feedback when I reject something. It can be as simple as the subber NOT reading the publication or as thorough as the piece not working for various reasons.
One rejection does not mean ALL your ideas are bad from here on out. Unless you were incredibly disrespectful to an editor--which I hope you aren't--you *can* pitch them again.
This idea that the ONE time you got an editor's attention means you can never respond or submit to them again is false. I purposely say, "Submit to me again if you have something that's a fit" because I know how writers think. I am one.
Tough love time, #writers: GET OUT OF YOUR HEAD AND GET INTO THE WORK. Stop overthinking what the work is and write it. If it doesn't feel right revise, chuck it, and/or move on.
Don't keep asking editors for a chance to revise and revise and revise. I'm happy to work with folks on a SOLID premise but don't write to please me. Write what YOU want to say. Then find someone who gets it/nurtures it.
The main thing that has affirmed my sense and place as a writer is this: I am never at a loss for ideas. They all don't stick but I keep having them. Good or bad. Whether you have a lot over a short period of time or a few over a long period TRUST you'll have more to say.
As an editor, I will say you're gonna burn a bridge if you keep asking for more chances with one work rather than show you have the range to write multiple things/dedicate time to making it solid on your own. The person who recognizes this is someone editors seek out regularly.
I'm rooting for y'all. Keep it professional. Stop overexerting yourselves with stress. YOU GOT THIS. #LectureOver
