Most features shouldn’t be 10,000 words, and fetishizing length often leads to some baggy self-indulgent shit. Those features that should be at that length can be written by any gender/race of person. Baggy self-indulgent shit is more often tolerated if a white man wrote it.
Anyway I could list every woman and POC who is a great long-from writer but that would take literally months and again, it’s not just long form that should be so celebrated.
Some of the all-time essayists, critics, reporters, humorists and yes, mag feature writers never cracked 5K. Brevity is the soul of wit—Polonious didn’t have it, but he was on to something.
Anyway, there’s a big debate about what was said and meant to be said, I only want to point out that we do young/most writers no favors in seeming to reserve the scepter of good writing for massive pieces.
