Earlier this year a local friend brought us a rose bush to plant in our garden. It came with a small bag of oats, like whole oat seeds.
"Jim," I said, "What are the oats for?"
Well," he says, "You dig the hole you're gonna plant the rose in and then you pour the oats in the bottom of it. Then you fill it up with water and put the rose in."
"What happens is the baby oats sprout at the bottom of the hole and then they die, so the rose can eat all of their nutrients."
