Today's Black History Month illustration is of Josephine Baker. She was a world famous entertainer, WWII spy, and activist. #BlackHistoryMonth #illustration
Freda Josephine McDonald was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1906. Her parents were both vaudeville performers, but Baker would have to take on odd jobs to help support her family.
At the age of 15, she ran off and joined a dance troupe from Philadelphia. She also got married, took her husband’s last name, dropped her first name and started going by the name Josephine Baker.
Today's Black History Month illustration is of Marvin Gaye's 1971 concept album What's Going On. This album is considered one of the greatest albums of the 20th century and one of the landmark recordings in pop music history.
Here are five interesting facts about the legendary album:
1. What’s Going On was one of R&B’s first concept albums. The album is from the point of view of a Vietnam War veteran returning back to the US and seeing hatred and injustice.
Today's Black History Month illustration is of Jane Bolin. She was the first Black woman to graduate from Yale Law School and the first Black woman judge in the United States. #blackhistorymonth #kidlitart
Jane Matilda Bolin was born in Poughkeepsie, NY in 1908. She was raised by her father, Gaius, a renowned Black attorney in Dutchess County, NY. Her mother, Matilda, a white Englishwoman, died when she was 8 years old.
In 1924, Bolin attended Wellesley College in Massachusetts, one of two Black students in her class. They were excluded from social activities and because of racial discrimination, they had to find housing off campus.

1) Develop your artistic skills: Scientific illustration is a highly specialized field, and it requires a high level of skill in illustration, drawing, and design. Take classes in art, drawing, and graphic design to develop your skills.
2) Learn about the scientific subject matter: Scientific illustrators need to have a deep understanding of the scientific concepts they are illustrating. Take courses in the sciences, such as biology, physics, or chemistry, to gain a solid foundation in the subject matter.

The Malabar banded peacock, Papilio buddha, is a swallowtail butterfly, endemic to the Western Ghats. This extremely swift butterfly is one of the most exquisite butterflies on the planet. It is primarily found between southern Goa and northern Kerala.

After 1-2 hours of generating terrible concepts, I finally landed on the idea of a cat reading books on how do cat stuff, including manipulating humans. Fun! Started with maybe 30 "cats in chairs" renders in #stablediffusion to get ideas:

I liked the cat face in the first one, but would need to hand edit the body to add a book so we could see the title. Then I decided I wanted him on a couch, not chair, to make seeing his pile of books easier. But first I edited the prompt to give me library ideas:

Luboš Plný is a Czech painter and conceptual artist, usually classified as a creator of art brut ("raw art" or "rough art"), a label created by French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe art created outside the boundaries of official culture.
Plný is fascinated by medical iconography. An expert in the mysteries of anatomy, he devotes himself – when not drawing – to all sorts of performances where he confronts the limits of pain, which he experiences as an act of purification, transforming suffering into artistic work.
He incorporates organic materials, photographs from 19th century atlases, pictures of anatomical wax models, and clippings of models from fashion magazines in his work. These images form the foundation for his graphical compositions.
Indian cities are not typically imagined to be biodiversity hotspots. Aspects of urban ecology often get missed in public conversations about the city.
