Former UK Perm. Rep to the EU Ivan Rogers tells @LordsEUCom that the UK-EU future relationship negotiations will be "one of the most difficult negotiations in history" - not because of lack of goodwill but because it will be "between partners who are seeking to get further apart"
Rodgers: Even after negotiation, the ratification process across the EU will likely take "another 18 months to 2 years" - though parts could be provisionally applied. As such, it is "blindingly obvious" that it will take until "early/mid 2020s at best" until trade deal concluded
Rodgers: "There is a widespread view in European capitals that the risk of a No Deal exit is above 50%... the accident risk is rising all the time, and you can hear and feel that anxiety across the UK private sector now."

Writing in @guardian about law politics & #Brexit, @prospect_clark refers to stealthy “leave means leave” FB campaigns for a #NoDealBrexit. @AdamRamsay, @paulhilder et al: if poison is found in our veins, do we await the post-mortem? Is there an antidote? theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
In that piece @prospect_clark points out (as he must) that the date on which we leave the #EU is set by its law, not ours. A #NoDealBrexit will place us at the mercy of all. Our MPs control UK laws only, But until #Brexit-day we have control of one thing: we can #RevokeArticle50.
It should by now be clear that there is no deal that is better than the one that we have. Within the #EU we have some control, have some part in shaping its laws & the way its laws are applied. 'Take back control' is a slogan wrapped round a lie that in the EU we have no control.

THREAD: right here's what I think is really going on with #Brexit:

May's game is move to a 2nd ref but blame Corbyn by havin all neolib forces pressure him to support it. then rig the vote while scaring us out of 'no deal' which is actually just 'brexit' - what we voted for 1/18
if the Tories adopt:
Lab Customs union deal = they split
No deal = they split
May's deal = they split
A people's vote = the country splits
this has been their plan all along: to forfeit country for party. to steal brexit. they do not want to leave. 'no deal' was a rebranding 2/19
Corbyn knows this & is bluffing May all the way to that cliff edge because actually he's got wings, & the freedom of a clean break will aid his program, free from EU spending caps or investment rules. he's far more willing to push this to the wire than May 3/19

Lots of noise around on #Brexit and customs today. The 'war' cabinet couldn't make decision. Here's what I know from sources in London, Dublin and Brussels. /1
The Olly Robbins presentation to cabinet heavily favoured the idea of a 'customs partnership' over a 'streamlined' or 'MaxFac' solution - still basically the two options outlined in the August customs paper here, and regurgitated at Mansion House /2

Even though the CP has been dismissed as 'magical thinking' etc, the govt is not giving up on the idea.

Why? Because, if it worked, it's the only way to get an All-UK solution on customs, avoid a goods border in Irish Sea and preserve some independent trade policy /3
