“I’m nervous impeaching him will help him in 2020”

I get it. The last thing any of us want is to help Trump get “re-elected.” But there is no reason to think this will be the case. Clinton isn’t comparable to Trump. And if we compare Nixon, hearings helped move public opinion.
“Pence will just pardon him for everything and he’ll walk”

A President Pence is never happening. Separate the processes of impeachment & removal in your mind because they are completely independent. For removal we need the GOP, which isn’t happening. Impeachment is in Dems hands
“I trust Pelosi. She knows what she’s doing.”

I have so much respect for Nancy Pelosi as a legislator. But she’s not treating this situation with the severity it deserves. A mentally unfit cognitively deteriorating President who is compromised by our enemies must be impeached.
“It’s going to rile up Trump’s base”

Who cares? They’re already riled up. What are they going to do? Chant “lock her up” even louder? Be even more psyched about migrant kids in cages? That 20% of the population is lost for now. But we don’t need it to vote him out in 2020.
“Trump will claim he was vindicated unless it removes him”

Again, who cares? He’s already claiming he was exonerated when everyone knows he wasn’t. Not moving forward with an impeachment inquiry actually DOES vindicate him and legitimizes everything he’s done as POTUS.
“There’s no point as long as the Republicans have the Senate”

Wrong. The House has the power of impeachment. And that house has been in OUR control for the past 5 months and our representatives have spent all their time on legislation that the senate will never vote on.
“Let’s just wait until the election and vote him out”

We acknowledge that impeachment will not remove him before the election. So this argument confuses impeachment for removal and fails to grasp the power of impeachment hearings to sway the public before the election.
The reasons not to are all rooted in fears about political consequences. We have history on our side. We have the truth on our side. We have the Constitution of the United States and the rule of law and the separation of powers on our side. These are what we should stand up for.
I’ve been compiling this list for weeks because I think it’s important for people to see what has been normalized under this administration. What it boils down to is that we cannot legitimize this. Or Democracy is dead and we may as well crown Trump King.
