I worked it out so last minute to come in for #MoralWitnessWednesday. Without trying to be spooky, I knew Spirit was tugging me somehow. The way these things always work, you go because you feel like it’s the right thing to do—then realize you came because your soul was thirsty.

I’m aware I’ve been ranting & raving less than I was. That’s not letting off the accelerator. That’s moving for the 5th time in 5 years, trying to get settled in a new city, & trying to get a brand new community off the ground in OKC. It’s been all-consuming. But, still...

There’s no getting around the fact my soul has been tired, the way a lot yours are tired. Tired of living in what surely must be an alternate reality. Tired of the gaslighting. Tired of people who should know better outright losing their minds.

Yes tired of the false religion of Franklin Graham & Jerry Falwell Jr., tired of them impugning the character of God with their lies about God, tired of them publicly bringing my Jesus into their depravity, & stringing Bible verses into their nonsense.

And while I reference it publicly almost never, years of losing friends over such things, being ridiculed like Noah building the ark before it rains—it’s not persecution. People deal with so much worse. But of course, all of that can wear you down.

But when I get into spaces like this, I feel sane again, peace again, the Holy Ghost in my bones again. I go to the black church over & over, not because I fetishize or romanticize it, but because she’s the only resource in America we have to draw from for resistance & renewal.

There’s no other path to freedom than the one already carved out. You can’t get more “progressive” than the Spirit of the future that brought Israel up out of Egypt, Jesus up out of the grave, & resurrection out of the death of MLK. The moment demands prophets, not philosophers.

So I keep showing up where folks have already been prophesying to dry bones. I keep showing up where folks have already been speaking truth to power. I keep showing up in the places where I will not only learn, but my my soul will be nourished, tended to, instructed.

If I haven’t said it in a minute, the rival visions in our time are not political, but spiritual. To see the dignity of all humans created in the image of God, or not see & thus blaspheme the Creator. Pharaoh or Moses, Jesus or Caesar, Christ or Antichrist. It’s not all the same.
