Critical speech by SA’s energy minister, Dan van Holst Pellekaan, charting a way forward on energy for Australia - there are huge opportunities for both state action and national collaboration (a thread) @perrybwilliams @leighsales @lenoretaylor @OBenPotter @BevanShields
“We need to take every opportunity to build common purpose at the COAG Energy Council”

With 12 months till the Qld election, it’s a window of a year without elections. Let’s use it, focusing on investor confidence, the Integrated System Plan and energy efficiency (productivity)
SA is showing that we CAN manage the transition to renewables, but it needs good planning - networks, synthetic inertia and better matching energy demand to when energy is generated. Let’s do less soundbite clean energy politics and more hard work to get details right.
There’s a huge opportunity to boost reliability and lower costs through smarter energy use (energy productivity). Van Holst Pellekaan says @AngusTaylorMP has shown real leadership here, time for state and territory governments to work together with him.
[Obligatory plug for the energy productivity report we released yesterday so my boss doesn’t kill me]

Building emergency generators, like the last SA government did, is stupid and bloody expensive ($612 million). Better to use demand response for emergencies and super-peak demand days [these might only happen every 2-10 years]
This speech is a rare thing in Australia right now - a pathway on energy that actually engages with the details.
Also, clearly this is all horribly paraphrased, Dan is far more charming and erudite than me.
