I took Najya to the new Toni Morrison doc. Not only did she witness a powerful woman on screen, she was surrounded by powerful women who have spent decades working on behalf of women. Gloria Aldridge even gave Najya her bus card & told her to call if any boys ever mess w her.😂
It was an amazing night. She was the only child there and didn’t quite understand how significant it was for her to meet these women, but one day she will. Grateful to Sister Sanchez for inviting me.

Damn. 27, actually, and if I ate seafood, it’d be even higher. We ate EVERYTHING growing up. Squirrel, frog legs, hog head cheese, chitlins.

Yesterday, @NYCMayor and @DOEChancellor announced what's been lauded as a major plan to address school segregation. Many advocacy groups and activists have proudly supported this. But, after reading closely the recommendations adopted, this is not a forceful plan for integration.
Most of the 62 recommendations adopted have nothing to do with integration. And not a SINGLE one mandates it. Look at the language here. The diversity task force called on DOE to require integration plans and evaluation of screens. DOE Says will “strongly encourage and support.”
Task force recommends studying equitable distribution of PTA funds — one of biggest driver of funding inequality between segregated schools — but DOE says will work to increase overall PTA capacity. All capacity in the world won’t make high-POV school raise $500k like wealth ones

I don't know how a non-survivor would feel. I can't speak for all survivors - only myself.

When men (or women) touch me without me expressing a direct invitation for contact, my stomach turns. I feel light-headed and angry, yet I struggle to assert myself.
