NEW: Our latest collaboration with 50 reporters across 10 countries in the Americas – the #BriberyDivision – reveals Odebrecht’s cash-for-contracts operation was even bigger than the company had acknowledged. bit.ly/2YhnALC #LavaJato #Odebrecht
#Odebrecht is the Brazilian multinational at the center of what the @TheJusticeDept called the “largest foreign bribery case in history.” It previously agreed to pay $2.6 billion to US, Brazilian & Swiss authorities in exchange for immunity or reduced penalties. #BriberyDivision
Together we’ve dug through 13,000+ files that come from Odebrecht’s Division of Structured Operations – the special unit created for managing and communicating about its secret payments. (Also where our investigation get its name #BriberyDivision) bit.ly/2Fsi9SL
We’ve read emails, spreadsheets and other documents to decipher the secret payments funneled through a network of offshore companies and bank accounts. Code names such as Waterloo, Darth Vader, Silver and Gigo were used to conceal their identities.
Among the findings: $39m+ in secret payments made relating to a coal-fired power plant in the Dominican Republic that had *never* been uncovered, despite not one, but two official investigations into the project. bit.ly/2YezTbp #BriberyDivision (Image: Ricardo Weibezahn)
Stay tuned for the latest (and get our email on the investigation) with our weekly newsletter. More to come! This is just the beginning of #BriberyDivision
