Getting pumped! Watching NBC News Now, the pre-debate coverage on the NBC News channel on Roku. 😬
The first 10! Elizabeth Warren and people polling under 5.
Sorry! It’s true!
“We’ll start this evening with Elizabeth Warren.”
I’ll be highlighting criminal justice mentions and questions.

They let Warren give an opening stump speech, more or less, in which part of what she said was criticism of private prisons and Black and Latinx families torn apart under that system.
Jay Inslee’s eyes just told me that I did something wrong. I don’t know what it was, but I’m sorry.
“All foam and no beer.”

Do people actually say that?
The phrase did, technically, exist before tonight.
Yeah, Inslee suggesting he’s the obvious champion for choice (because of state legislation he signed, apparently) on the stage with three women standing there was ... a choice.
O’Rourke highlights mass incarceration, talking about people in prison for drug use. He says pharma needs to pay for its actions, says people, though, need “treatment and long-term care.”
Castro talks about Trump immigration policy, saying he’d end “zero tolerance,” remain-in-Mexico asylum policy, and metering via executive order on day one.
Booker says he’d end Trump border policies, reinstate DACA, and address larger issues of foreign aid/support.
Castro says he’d push to repeal [Title 8] Section 1325, which criminalizes border crossing, to return to treating crossing as a civil violation. Challenges all Dems on stage to support that.
BdB pushes back on Trump, indirectly, saying that immigration isn’t to blame for people’s economic problems — but rather that corporate greed, etc., has caused the problems referenced.
Tim Ryan goes to lowest-common denominator reasoning, saying that things need to be fixed because “there are terrorists” held at Gitmo getting better health care than the children at the border. Sigh.
LMAO. You can’t outshout the hard-break for commercials at the top of the hour, de Blasio!
Lol.
“Gun violence is a national health emergency,” Warren says, backing universal background checks and banning “weapons of war.” Then, she says, we need research and data to decide what next. Booker goes in a different direction, saying it’s a personal issue.
Ryan says schools need to do more to deal with trauma ahead of time, before crisis hits, saying it requires attention to and resources to mental health issues.
Chuck Todd refers to gun buyback as “confiscation,” and Klobuchar calls that out, saying that’s not what a buyback program is.
“I run the largest police force in America,” Bill de Blasio says — an important issue: Mayors need to take responsibility for the police forces that run under their leadership, not just defer to the Chief and FOP.
More African-Americans under criminal justice control today than were slaves in 1850, Booker says; reform, he says, has been a main focus of his since joining the Senate. Says he worked to build a coalition to get to the First Step Act, which he says is a good first step.
Gabbard is asked about her LGBTQ apology, and asked why people should trust her. She says she’s got a record, voted for the Equality Act, and served with gay and lesbian service members. (Didn’t talk about trans people.)
Booker says it’s not enough to be on the Equality Act — talking about anti-trans violence, particularly against black trans women. Saying you need to do more.
Klobuchar says we need a Second Step Act for more criminal justice change.
Castro highlights his policing plan — which is significant: google.com/amp/s/www.texa…
In Tulsi Gabbard’s America, the White House will be a lighthouse!
So, we made it! Only 823 debates left.
