Reading NYT opinions bemoaning the fact that Dems are moving left. They say that the Dems are de-centering the majority--white voters who have health insurance & can pay for college education. Writers haven't looked at the demographics in a while. They're no longer the majority.
I suppose when you're surrounded by a select group, it's easy to imagine that everyone is like you... but candidates, like Warren and Castro, have studied the landscape. They understand the shift that the US has been going through.
Younger generations know what it's like to graduate with college debt in order to work full-time at their gig-economy, patch work jobs, with no insurance, no health care, and no retirement benefits.
Housing costs are out-pacing wages in the cities where people can find jobs. They understand that the "threat" is not coming from the tiny children who are being detained and caged at the border. The threat coming from the structure that has kept pharmaceutical profits bloated,
that has stripped workers of every benefit, that has encouraged predatory lending from the time a person turns 17, that has allowed the mortgage industry to go unchecked. It comes from the system of fines that puts people in prison for being poor...
and from the injustice that POCs face in almost every facet of our society. These are not the problems of a tiny minority of our country... Now that Millennials outnumber Boomers, they are the problems of the majority.
Our country already has a party for wealthy white people who aren't affected and/or do not care about these issues... and it's not the Democratic Party. So the NYT probably needs to get over the fact that the Party is moving left. Because the whole country is moving left.
