A crucially important article by Terry Burke, that everyone on the left should read. It shows how we've been divided by a "substantial, coordinated disinformation effort" originating with Russian and Syrian state media. countervortex.org/node/16383
Large numbers of people have fallen for blatant lies, generated by the Steve Bannon strategy of countering the left by "flooding the zone with shit". Many who should know better have been blithely recycling Russian and Syrian propaganda. The peace movement has been riven by it.
As a result, "most of the peace movement in the US still doesn't recognize the legitimacy of the Syrian people's eight-year struggle against the Assad dictatorship."
The voices of Syrians have been buried in an avalanche of propaganda, denying Assad's massive crimes and depicting any criticism of them as part of a US regime change effort. In fact, there is no such effort: motherjones.com/politics/2019/…
Those of us who recognise the bombing, gassing, starvation, mass imprisonment, torture, repression and assassinations implemented by the Assad government are, as a result of this disinformation effort, depicted as "warmongers". Why? Because we oppose war.
People who claim to be humanitarians ignore or - worse - deny hideous atrocities, such as the sustained bombing of civilians in Idlib for the last month, including attacks on 25 hospitals. Those who deny or dismiss such attacks, thereby assisting Assad, are the real warmongers.
