Letter in @Telegraph today.

1. It skims the difficulty of getting the EU to agree (see eg the decision to extend Brexit to October 31).

2. @WTODGAZEVEDO is right. Without a deal, it's GATT Art1 (non discrimination), so tariffs on UK-EU trade.

This stuff about @wto not being there "to force countries to impose tariffs on each" other misses the point of the WTO completely. Surprising: 2 lawyers signed.

Countries use the WTO to negotiate. One of its functions: upholding those agreements, including GATT Art1 (MFN)

P.S. I wrote a letter to @Telegraph rebutting some key claims in the July 10 letter (above). As far as I know the paper did not think a rebuttal would be useful, either from me or from anyone else.

I’m not skipping forward. @JWhittingdale asks: “To your knowledge, the British government has not so far raised the possibility of a GATT24 agreement in the event of no deal?”

Let's translate this. GATT24 = “a free trade agreement in goods.”

Translation 1 — broadest possible. @JWhittingdale is asking: “To your knowledge, the British government has not so far raised the possibility of ‘a free trade agreement in goods’ in the event of no deal?”

One of the saddest parts of this "smokescreen" is that GATT Article 24 has been introduced to the public debate ONLY in a form that's no longer used, "interim".

The focus should be on what GATT Art24 is: the main WTO rule allowing free trade deals in goods/customs unions.

Not on the "interim" variety with its 10-yr limit, no longer used and not necessary for Brexit.

Paragraph 5c only applies to "interim" agreements. They are cumbersome, no longer used & unnecessary even for a standstill while the UK & EU negotiate longer term agreements. Neither @afneil nor @BorisJohnson came off well here

Right #Brexit peeps, what is going on? What happens next?

Short answer is its all pretty fluid, but here's what I think I know after usual chats with both etc (1/thread)
May will ask for extension to June 30, per reports.

Less clear if she will also say UK prepared to 'no deal' on June 30. That might be a key omission to watch, on which more later.

So will the EU agree? /2
Not necessarily. As @adamfleming warned this AM - and later confirmed by @JunckerEU interview - EU may say a short extension is "conditional" on May passive her deal next week (presumed new vote Mon or Tues)

On Labour/second referendum: Corbyn seen in Europe as convinced
eurosceptic so EU is sceptical of his backing a second referendum. EU
has watched #Brexit turmoil long enough to see huge complications in
holding the vote and realise many leave voters have changed their

Of course EU would still rather UK stayed but Europe's leaders don't
see this as realistically on the cards right now. Most realistic,
considering turmoil in Westminster, says EU council President Tusk:
