India's Mobility Surge | This migration thread, third in the #Census2011Migration series, shows why the 21st century marks a dramatic break from the past. Internal migration rates of India which was around 30% for decades, surged to 38% in 2011, riding higher economic growth.
This mobility surge was broad based for rural and urban India and for males and females (marriage being an important reason for female mobility). Migration rate for urban India shot up from 36% to 46% in 2011.
The urban migration rate went up because of a rise in rural-urban migration volumes (to 78 million people) but more so due to urban-urban migration (to also 78 million people). For the first time, Urban-Urban migration was as SIGNIFICANT as Rural-Urban Migration!
As seen in previous chart, net rural-urban migration volumes continued to grow at a rate nearly double India's overall population growth rate, though slightly slower than before. Ideally, it should be MUCH MORE. See recent piece @gandhisahil @gregfrandolph hindustantimes.com/analysis/migra…
India's surge in mobility, especially for economic reasons and even from urban areas, was first spotted in the National Sample Survey (NSS) data on out-migration for comparable estimates between 1993 and 2007-08, though not so much in the NSS data on in-migration for males.
The surge in mobility for economic reasons was also described in the Economic Survey of India 2016-17, Chapter 12, using provisional data of Census 2011, including 'one-year migration durations' @pcmohanan
