Bit odd May boasts of voting for deal and asks what Corbyn did. It was a crap deal & Corbyn was consistent in opposing it. Why not ask what Johnson did? Called it ‘vassal state’, voted against twice, then approved it when May tied it to her resignation. The purest cynicism. #PMQs
Corbyn was a lot more gracious to May, and far more than she deserved, than she was to him. One of the points overlooked amidst torrent of sewage that was her premiership is the mean-spiritedness she showed throughout it. Can’t be gone soon enough. #PMQs
Never forgot total gratuitous arrogance May showed in her first #PMQs. Tim Farron good-humouredly mused how they both stood for & lost the same seat in ‘92 & now both led their parties. May spat out ‘yes, and my party’s a little bigger than his’. This is how she treated everyone.

Very interesting thread, and of course absolutely right that Johnson wants power above all. But if he stands on that damn-EU-and-Remain-MPs no-deal platform, what then? It still ends in disaster for him.
Best case scenario, Remainers recognise unique national emergency, hold noses and vote Labour. It’s in fact the surest way for Labour to win power, as opposing no-deal has been Labour’s one absolutely consistent Brexit policy all along.
Imagine the hell of that campaign. The Tories will be inviting us to jump off a cliff and pretending there’s a golden mattress at the bottom of it. A huge tactical voting campaign will begin to ensure that people support whoever is best placed to stop the Tories.

Hard to know where to start with this garbage. Whole point of backstop is it’s an insurance policy in case trade negotiations break down. That’s why it has to be agreed now. If Johnson is so sure of alternative arrangements then he should be only too happy to accept it.
He’s right that a backstop, with its customs union with no say, damages democracy. So would a return to a hard border in Ireland, with its economic chaos & risk of violence. So would a no-deal, which was endorsed by nobody in 2016 and just a third of people in European elections.
But above all, never stop asking this: if Johnson despises backstop so much, why did he remain as Foreign Secretary in the government which negotiated it for seven whole months after it was agreed? It was crystal clear what it involved. Did he not understand it or just not care?

So much vom. Johnson already playing patriotism card against his opponents (‘betting against Britain’), turning people against each other, and promising a ‘new, better deal’ with no basis or evidence whatsoever. PM for all of half an hour and already he’s a fucking catastrophe.
Johnson utters the most chilling words ever uttered from the steps of Downing Street: ‘I will take personal responsibility for what happens.’
Johnson says we’re renowned around the world for our sense of humour. Couldn’t agree more, but he didn’t need to become prime minister to prove the fucking point

We can have a UK-EU deal after leaving with no-deal (or the EU will shift red lines) or as Farage said yesterday "They'll come running".

Who said "EU trade representatives have to deal with an unresponsive 1950s bureaucracy and 28 sets of competing special interests. This undermines the EU’s ability to strike trade deals"? Vote Leave.

And yes leaving with no deal has an immediate economic impact, as barriers rise on perhaps 60% of our trade. That's not corporate special interests, that's peoples jobs.

Some thoughts on Belgium’s abstention, but more so Frances vote against the US-EU FTA negotiations (thread)
In the past all EU FTAs (but two) were so-called “mixed” agreements. I.e. (to simplify) they included member state competences. If one member state voted against an FTA, it killed it.
The Singapore opinion of the CJEU has clarified the EU’s competences with regard to negotiating FTAs. EU-only FTAs are now a real option. This might have surprising side-effects.

@BernieSanders When Sen. Sanders successfully ran for the House in 1990, he got the tacit endorsement of the NRA after pledging not to support the Brady Bill, which included waiting periods to receive weapons.
@BernieSanders Once in the House, he kept his word, voting against the legislation five times. Sanders said he opposed the legislation because it did not have instant background checks. He repeatedly noted that Vermont is a state without gun regulation.

Most assuredly, the issuer has zero idea what the other individuals interests actually are.
