It's time to update my PreApocalyptic Planning Party playlist of a musical soundtrack for shamelessly dancing badly while increasing community resilience & mitigating future doom.
How I practice #SciComm:
The lovely lad at the liquor store asked an opener, so just got the 30sec version of “Throw parties & invite your neighbours to survive our next big disaster.”
I'm tempted to add @mikasounds to the disaster prep party pop playlist as name-kin. "Happy Ending" is about breakups, but resilience is resilience wherever you find it...

My first-ever academic talk was in English with my slides en français (proofed by a francophone friend I bribed with wine).

Lots of animations of models, carefully tech-checked earlier in the day, times & over-rehearsed... so of COURSE we had a hiccup & I had to go slideless.
I sounded like a kindergartener stumbling through an inadequate technical vocabulary with atrocious grammar, but in retrospect it was my rite of passage into Canadian academia.

Getting this system in play is big, but getting public understanding & support is HUGE for regional disaster prep.
Between this & the PNW FEMA comms opening, we’re totally gathering up the disaster communications folks into the lands of perpetual overcast.

I don’t have any disaster preparedness tips for mass shooting besides extensive overhaul of firearms law.

Mitigation is the only path forward to a better future. Even improving licensing & enabling research would be better than this.
See replies for trauma first aid tips.

But realistically?
Unless trained & drilled continuously, most normal humans freeze & forget basic “How to call 911” protocols. Even trained responders screw up taking a pulse.

Training won’t hurt.
But... it’s got low payoff.
Q: But what if we just drill ALL THE TIME?

A: You could. It’d take a huge amount of time & resources, but you could.

But before taking that path, authorize research into its efficacy & impact?
Because right now we’re not allowed to gather data & anecdotally it just traumatizes.

Journalists are all in on covering the upcoming European Parliament elections. But most power still resides in nation states and the EP is not the most powerful institution within the EU.

So national elections remain more important. Poland's in the fall are crucial, for example.
Ok, so, Finland...

The spotlight here has been on the far-right populist "True Fins" party. Late opinion polls suggested that it may come second.

According to early returns, it could only come third or forth. (Look for PS in the attached chart.)

To be clear these are just the ballots counted in foreign countries! The ballots in #Israel will be counted now. So Gantz has nothing to declare victory right now. First clear exit polls over 40 minutes.
