When Margaret Thatcher let slip the view that "there's no such thing as society" she revealed a key part of #Tory thinking. There 1/4
2/4 are two ways of thinking about ourselves: Either: 1. We're a social animal and we ought to help each other; or 2. We're all disconnected individuals and we should only ever think about what's best for us (& maybe our immediate family). The underlying #Tory mind-set is
3/4 number 2, which is why they actively *hate* and want to destroy the #NHS (which they voted against creating in the first place) because it 'clubs us together' as a group which is the opposite of their "everyone for themselves" attitude. #Tories' policies and short-term

Don't forget - if @joswinson & the @LibDems don't behave sensibly you can, relatively quickly & easily, un-lend them your vote; but we CAN'T quickly or easily "vote ourselves back into the #EU". For now, #Brexit is the over-arching issue. (I mean stopping it, obviously.) 1/2
2/2 It looks like a remain alliance led by the @LibDems is the *only* likely way to stop #Brexit. People can re-group & think about the rest of the sh1t we're in once it's dead & buried. Otherwise it'll be us who're dead & buried once our rights are destroyed.

2. Now, we can't tell exactly what Rees-Mogg has in mind when he sonorously invokes VCLT Art 62. But I think we can safely bet that in his view, a failure to reach an agreement with the EU constitutes a fundamental change of circumstances that entitles the UK to terminate.

2. First, some background. From 1899 to 1901, roughly 48,000 people died in British concentration camps in South Africa. Of the 28,000 white deaths, 22,000 were children under 16. Over 4,000 were women. The 20,000 Black deaths were less clearly recorded, but c.80% were children.
3. The camps killed about 10% of the total white population & perhaps a quarter of Boer women and children. Most died of diseases like typhoid, their resistance weakened by malnutrition. This is Lizze Van Zyl, whose food rations were cut to put pressure on her father to surrender

A year and a half of being vegan and here's what I can tell you:

1. I LOVE eating vegan food.
2. I LOVE cooking vegan food.
3. I do NOT miss meat, eggs or milk.
4. I've lost weight and feel and am A LOT healthier.
5. I have an annual income of less than $20,000.
How has it been possible for me to be vegan:

1. I live alone so I only have to cook for myself.
2. I only have to teach / hold office hours a maximum of 20 hours a week (spend the rest of the time researching, studying).
3. I have a Trader Joe's within walking distance.
How's my relationship with non-vegans:

1. Fine.
2. If at an event and non-vegan food is only option, I don't refuse.
3. If lovingly offered non-vegan food, I take it but inform offerer that I'd appreciate being offered only vegan food in the future. Almost everyone complies.

We have no governance structures which can cope with rapid technological change.

Brexit seems to be the solution to all our economic woes (short thread)

E.g., Hannan thinks that Brexit will be great because house prices will crash by 1/3. That will be great for first-time buyers, right?
Problem is last time house prices crashed (2008) home ownership in younger people did not increase. It decreased by quite a bit as can be seen in this graph. 2/
That's because housing prices are connected to lots of other things in the economy, such as job prospects, lending criteria. It's not that people in 2008 were like "Hey look, all those houses around us have become cheaper. Now we can finally buy!" 3/
