Very interested to see what kind of deal is made with the Taliban in Afghanistan.

One thing I know for certain — al-Qaeda and ISIS will never be at the negotiating table.

A meaningful counter-terrorism force is an insurance policy against another 9/11.

The Taliban gave safe haven to Bin Laden and al-Qaeda. Afghanistan is where the 9/11 attacks were planned.

ISIS/al-Qaeda presence in Afghanistan (ISIS-K) has been growing as we increase the pressure in Syria and Iraq.

ISIS-K can be very lethal to the American homeland.
I hope any agreement will be a good deal for America that protects our homeland, our allies, and our interests.

It is one thing to end the war with honor and security.

It is another to simply hope it goes away.

President @realDonaldTrump instincts to deliver a punishing blow to Syria’s Assad, after a second use of chemical weapons, was right.

Unfortunately, he was talked out of it by Pentagon planners who consistently underestimate the consequences of a weak response. (1)
@realDonaldTrump When it comes to Iran we have lost deterrence.

To Pentagon planners: a weak response over this outrageous Iranian aggression only invites more aggression.

It will also eventually lead to a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.

Be Strong Now or pay a Bigger Price Later.
@realDonaldTrump I hope (but have my doubts) that Pentagon planners are giving President Trump a wide range of options that would punish Iran and restore deterrence.

There are steps between being weak and total war.

A great briefing by @VP Pence to the Senate Republican Conference regarding the attack on Saudi oil facilities.

It’s clear to me that such a sophisticated attack could not have occurred without Iran’s blessing and direct involvement.
@VP This is literally an act of war and the goal should be to restore deterrence against Iranian aggression which has clearly been lost.
@VP I applaud the Administration’s efforts to create a regional coalition, thoroughly brief the Congress on the actions taken, and come up with a plan of action to restore deterrence against an evil regime in Iran.

1. The Turks who are actively working with both Al-#Qaeda and #ISIS will never stop their threats against US forces and our Syrian partners because we continue to allow them to throw all #Kurds into the Turks' racist basket. The only solution is for @StateDept to de-list the PKK.
2. The #PKK has never threatened the US. We should recognize that the Turkish apartheid state has created an ongoing civil war and deal with the combatants in ways that are in the US best interest but using the "terrorist" designation as a favor for an ally is counter-productive.
3. When we charge terrorist violations we are able to prove an element of the offense by simply proving the person was a member of a listed group. But listing must be of a terrorist organization. Courts do not challenge the elements of the listing because generally they are met.

Per this @nakashimae/@missy_ryan story on the American #ISIS fighters being transferred stateside to be tried in civilian court, it’s not just that sending them to the #GTMO military commissions would be stupid; there’s also no legal authority to do so.

Under the Military Commissions Act, only an “alien unprivileged enemy belligerent” can be tried by the #GTMO tribunals:

US citizens can still theoretically be tried by military commission under World War II-era precedents, but (1) only for international war crimes; and (2) under different authority than the #GTMO commissions:
