Following on from my threads on the past 3 yrs for the 3 biggest Japanese manufacturers in the UK + Brexit - Nissan, Honda & Toyota, here's a thread on the rest of Japanese automotive production businesses in the UK. Many of which are dependent on what Nissan/Honda/Toyota do 1/
As @nigel_driffield put it “It is not a question of what’s here already, it’s a question of what is not going to come here. In the next 12-18 months, Nissan, Honda + Toyota – will decide where they are going to make their new models in 2023-24." 2/ theguardian.com/business/2019/…
Some 70 per cent of the UK automotive industry is made up of smaller companies with ten or fewer staff, says Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders 3/ wired.co.uk/article/uk-car…
Japanese automotive manufacturing companies in UK employ around 37,000 people, around 15,000 of which are Nissan/Toyota/Honda plants/sales/logistics 4/
Next biggest is Unipres, employing 1400 in Sunderland for Nissan, operation in Birmingham supplying Honda. "we will start considering our options, including shutting down," a Unipres representative said March 2019. 5/
May 2019 Unipres confirms will close Birmingham Honda unit, with loss of 100 jobs by 2021. There is a sister plant in France. 6/ chroniclelive.co.uk/business/busin…
Unipres had invested in new press in Sunderland in 2015 for launch of Juke in 2019 and Qashqai in 2020 - turnover/employees grew to 2017, profit/employees down 2018, predicting decline 2019. 7/ chroniclelive.co.uk/business/busin…
Calsonic Kansei - Japanese automotive manufacturer in UK (1700 employees) has plants in Llanelli, Sunderland, Romania, Spain. Is now owned by US's KKR. KKR acquired Italian Magneti Marelli in 2018. So plenty of alternatives to UK production, altho each makes different parts 8/
Calsonic Kansei given £4.4m grant from Welsh government for electric vehicle related technology December 2018, creating 85 new jobs. Presumably meant to be for Honda electric vehicles that aren't going to be made in UK any more. 9/ bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-…
Calsonic executive reaction to a no deal Brexit was ""all we can do is pray" in March 2019. April 2019 announces will cut 95 jobs at Llanelli 10/ bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-…
Denso is another of the biggest 🇯🇵 automotive parts manufacturers in 🇬🇧, employing around 2,000 people, in the Toyota group but supplying other car brands too. Has been very quiet on Brexit, but has reorganised so that all UK subsidiaries are now owned by Dutch regional HQ. 11/
This means UK sales operation is now just an agent, rather than principal, so invoicing etc presumably all done out of NL, avoiding any bureaucratic/financial messes with a crash out Brexit. Plenty of factories elsewhere in EU. But stockpiling will only last a few days for UK.12/
