This is brand new cycle infrastructure in @dlrcc built to the standards of the NTA’s National Cycle Manual. The manual is flawed. It requires too much painted cycle lane and the limited number of places there are curbs they are small and ineffective. #DeathByDesign
@dlrcc Here's footage of the painted cycle lanes at this junction being ignored. Driving in a mandatory cycle lane is dangerous and illegal.
Here's footage of drivers mounting the tiny segregated curbs that the NTA National Cycle Manual uses. The cycle lane is effectively used as extra left turn space for drivers:
A major issues with the NTA National Cycle Manual is that it intentionally creates these "re-establishment zones" at junctions. The curbs on cycle tracks disappear and painted cycle lanes are used. This is to encourage cyclists and motor traffic to "negotiate the conflict."
Here's what NTA National Cycle Manual compliant "segregated cycle tracks" look like in real life and the manual. There is a 5cm curb between the cycle track and the road. (That's too small) In the second photo you can see the small curb disappear for a painted cycle.
I love Dublin City Council for how they ignore the National Cycle Manual for the benefit of cyclists sometimes. This is the Grand Canal Cycleway it's the same design as the newly built City Quay two-way cycle track. A large 10cm curb that is wide. This is what we need and want.
When there is more space available we should be trying to include a grass buffer (with trees) between the cycle track on the road. This improves comfort levels and safety. This design exists in the NTA National Cycle Manual but I've never seen it constructed like in Dublin.
Many of the problems with the National Cycle Manual are why the under construction Clonskeagh Road upgrade is still quite poor. It's will be an improvement but it's still far short of being safe for all people on bikes. More info: trello.com/c/mcMPY7KG/55-…
I expect the @dlrcc engineers will tell us that the drivers driving in the mandatory painted cycle lanes are driving illegally. That this is an issue for @GardaTraffic. However, at what point should engineers look at their design and say it's not working? #DeathByDesign
.@dublincycling and @IBIKEDublin are clear on what kind of cycle infrastructure people who cycle want. We're looking for cycle infrastructure that is safe for people of all ages and abilities. That's what will enable the broadest range of people to cycle safely and comfortably.
@dublincycling @IBIKEDublin One other key point I must highlight. Not only do we need to make cycling a bike statistically safer in Dublin. We also need to make it feel safe. Otherwise people will not take it up. There is safety in numbers. The more people cycling the safer we all are.
