I’m a Jay-Z fan. Been one forever. But that doesn’t prevent me from saying that this social justice partnership he’s doing w/ the NFL was built on the back of Colin Kaepernick. If Kap doesn’t kneel/get blackballed, there’s no inroads for any of this. And it’s weak as sh*t.
The two people that stand to benefit the most out of this from an optics standpoint are Bob Kraft and Roger Goodell. They get to use an icon like Jay to pretend like their turning over a new leaf. Kraft flying Meek around in his PJ and sh*t... I knew something was weird.
The irony of Kap protesting for equal rights and empowerment. Meek being the poster boy for racial bias part of that. Meek getting locked up for riding a dirt bike on probation is part of that. Meek finally getting a new trial *ALSO* part of that. C’mon son.
So now, w/ the help and invaluable cultural cache of Roc Nation and S. Carter, the NFL gets to pretend like they’re finally doing something right. But nah. It’s just to get people to watch football again. It’s just ratings and ad money. It’s pretty clear.
None of what I’m saying here is to trivialize Meek and his tribulations. He’s gone THROUGH it. But he doesn’t throw a football. So it’s an easy play. The timing of the #FreeMeek doc and the announcement of this venture was way too convenient.
With all this being said, I’ll delete this whole thread if we get a Griselda halftime show at a future Super Bowl.
