this is describing the dot-com crash, but sounds pretty much exactly like what’s happening today (and likely what the recession is gonna do)

thoughts after ch1: the book is pretty effusive and uncritical. it’s fascinating to read about how author presents Musk revolutionizing space, auto, and solar when SolarCity is basically dead and Tesla’s been going from problem to problem in past couple years

so Elon’s grandfather, who was “eccentric” and “a model for Musk,” campaigned against “government interference” and the decline of “moral character” in Canada, then moved his family to apartheid South Africa.

sounds like a lot is conveniently glossed over here.

sorry, but “overhyping products and playing the public” is not “one of Musk’s greatest talents as a businessman.”

there are so many baffling comments in this book. it’s really... not good.

this author is so deep in the cult of musk it’s embarrassing as a reader

vance will include a criticism of musk (ex. first image), then immediately try to justify and explain it away (second img). in this case, she also includes total gobbledygook from musk himself.

no joke, musk is a fucking slave driver and vance is living for it for some reason. it’s mind boggling.

the author is using the male pronoun as a neutral pronoun and it feels very out-of-date and distracting

reading this book is torture

running a car company is apparently “an exceptional feat in the history of capitalism.” vance loves exaggeration.

life on Mars is apparently for dipshit millionaires who can think of nothing better to do than shell out to live in a wasteland

Happy to have this confirmed: the goal of Hyperloop was to get California’s high-speed rail canceled. Musk and the Kochs, both trying to halt a transition away from automobiles.

For Musk, fantasy technologies are preferable to real solutions.

also, i made a mistake earlier in the thread and referred to vance as “she.” apologies; i should know better than to assume.

musk thinks he needs to have more kids because smart people aren’t having enough kids, but don’t worry, people who aren’t smart can still habe kids too 🤦🏻‍♀️

i’m officially done reading this fucking book and i just want to say, do not punish yourself.

it’s not very well written, and the author is all in on Musk; not just ignoring issues, but constantly explaining away problematic behavior. it’s bad. one star.
