1/ Thread. All of us in Canada are blessed to live in a pluralism that exists because we have the right to be free from discrimination based on many things, including who we love.
2/ Each of us have the responsibility to protect that right, not just for ourselves, but for every Canadian. We also have the responsibility to put compassion first, and seek this right for every person around the world.
3/ While we have made great strides in Canada on these fronts, this progress can’t be viewed as permanent. There will always be those who seek to limit these rights based on false dogma, ugly mores, or just plain hate. We must all make sure that is unacceptable and unthinkable.
4/ We celebrate this progress in Canada, and those who fought for it. But we also acknowledge that it only happened in very recent years (the Stonewall Riots were only 50 years ago), and that there is still more work to do here and abroad. We also remember those lost to hate.
5/ To me, this is what my friends express the the Pride movement as encapsulating for them. It’s what it means to me. I stand with them through both my words and actions, I stand with our beautiful free country, and I wish Calgary a Happy Pride Sunday.
